Review: RG 1/144 RX-78/C.A Casval's Gundam

Let's look at this cool red guy, shall we?

This variant of RX-78-2 Gundam originates from the Mobile Suit Gundam Gihren’s Greed game series — this is a mobile suit developed by Zeon and it's actually quite different from RX-78-2 on the inside. As usual with red Zeon mobile suits this one is finely tuned for use by Char.

Knowing that Bandai loves to release gentei variations of existing kits I knew it was only a matter of time until we will see this kit. It took quite a while, but this fall Bandai finally announced RG RX-78-2 in Char Aznable colors. The kit was sold through online P-Bandai shop and is currently sold out, although there's a chance you can find it on eBay.

With Exia kits (repair set and red/white Astreyas), Bandai has moved on from recoloring molds and started to add new parts. This is the first gentei RG that has parts specially molded and not avaialble as a separate set, although it's just 2 parts. Here are the three runners new to this kit:

J2 are dark brown versions of the ankle guard parts, and J1 has the two modified parts. Pelvis inset no longer has a V-shaped mark and is molded in one piece, and shield doesn't carry the EFSF cross:

Surprisingly the kit's specific markings come not as stickers, but decals. According to the included manual sheet these are the only markings that have to be applied apart from foil stickers applied during the construction:

Looks like this guys is in for the top-coat treatment. Another thing that did surprise me was the choice of the plastic for the E runners. It's the more softer variety of PS plastic, the one that you usually see used for silver and "lame" gold parts. The mold is good and detail is all there, but these parts lack that tack sharp feel that other parts from usual harder PS plastic have:

Note the difference between the top and the lower part of the front skirt trim. Top part comes from E runner, lower one — from D, that uses traditional PS plastic:

With the special parts this kit leaves a few extras. Pity there's no 1/144 Char figure included.

Other than that this is the same Real Grade RX-78-2 kit in a lovely red scheme. Finally I can post some RX-78 photos to Zeon-themed groups. And while I do that, here's a couple of photos of the completed kit:
